Results
The Final Table was packed with poker superstars, and the odds were palpably against him, but Brett Faustman from Michigan was the lucky recipient of the best cards on the day and he walked away with the World Poker Open title and almost $900 000in winnings at the Gold Strike Casino in Robinsonville in January 2008.
A total dark horse to the professional poker world, Faustman had to contend with true poker giants including two former WPT champions, Freddy Deeb (UltimateBet Aruba Poker Classic 2005) and Hoyt Corkins (WPT Finals 2003), the 2005 CardPlayer 'Player of the Year" – Men Nguyen - and John Spadavecchia, who has career earnings well in excess of $2.4million!
One by one the leading celebrities fell by the wayside and it was soon heads-up time for the 28 year old former collegiate wrestler and the reticent Alabama cowboy, Hoyt Corkins. Faustman went in with a slight chip advantage,
2 715 000 to Corkins' 2 470 000 and it all went his way – he simply picked up the best cards and won the biggest pots!
After a lengthy 40 hands Corkins tried his luck with an all-in on a board showing 993, but his 22 was up against QQ, and Faustman could celebrate one of the most unlikely victories in the WPT history.
