The Foxwoods Resort Casino is the pride and joy of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe, and is the largest casino in North America with 7000 slot machines and hundreds of gaming tables. The resort is more like a bustling town than an entertainment complex and it boasts three hotels, 25 restaurants, the 1 400 seater Fox Theatre and a museum preserving the rich culture and history of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe.
Getting there
The casino is situated in Connecticut, New England and is easily accessible by car, plane, train or ferry. If you are travelling from New York by car take the I-95 North until Exit 92 in Connecticut where you leave the Interstate. Turn left onto Route 2 West and continue for about 8 miles to Foxwoods.
There are two airports near to the casino, the TF Green in Warwick Rhode Island and the Bradley International Airport at Hartford. Warwick is only an hour's drive from the casino and Hartford about two hours away. There are buses which leave from both Warwick and Hartford to the resort – Conway Tours and Peter Pan Arrow. Results
It was one of the toughest showdowns for American poker ace, Mike Vela - he had to outgun two of the hottest contenders for the World Poker Finals throne – defending champion Nenad Medic and 2005 winner Nick Schulman. Mike 'MVP' Vela is no novice when it comes to the World Poker Tour – he has tasted relative success in two other WPT events – the 2006 version of the Foxwoods World Poker Finals, where he finished thirteenth and grabbed over $70 000 in winnings and the 2007 Borgata Poker Open where he claimed over $34 000 for his 18th placing.
Vela went to the Final Table and the heads-up encounter the out and out chip leader, and it didn't take him long to finish off his final rival, Nick Schulman. The end was a real classic with Schulman going all-in with pocket fives and Vela calling with A-Q. Vela flopped two pair and it was all a little bit too much for the runner-up who collected a hefty $864 652 as a consolation prize.
Vela pocketed a very robust $ 1 704 986 for his undisputed World Poker Finals victory, and had this to say after the event "It allows me to take care of my house and my kids and it also shows that I can play with these guys. In my mind I knew I could do it and I validated that today."
